“Hackers” are making their mark in a tech world that does not yet have the codes of parity

A 100% female class. No, Toulouse is not back in 1960. In these “Hackeuse” courses, where the “great atmosphere reigns” between young ladies, we train to become an application developer. “I was a web manager for a tourism company in Albi. I did communications, I managed the site, etc. Thanks to certain tasks, I wanted to go further,” explains Marie Thomas, one of the new students in the free, single-sex training offered by Simplon.

After a conventional break, the young woman was able to begin her professional reconversion with the help of Pôle emploi, a training partner. At 25, it’s back to school. “But fortunately, it’s a lot less academic. We are in practice.” She and 23 other women have been screwed every day since September 11 in front of the computer, coding.

Out of more than a hundred applications, only 24 women were able to access this first single-sex training. -LT

“It’s super accessible even if we all have a basic interest in IT,” rejoices Marie, who can count on her classmates in the event of a problem. “We are very supportive of each other,” she enthuses. Bastien Krettly, their trainer, can only confirm this: “There are preconceived ideas about single-sex classes, but I can say that that doesn’t change anything, everything is going very well. On the contrary, they feel more comfortable and less in comparison.” In class, if the girls are very serious about their daily duties, they are still good-natured. “We enjoy coming, we meet great people because we all come from different worlds, ages and backgrounds too.”

The proportion of women in the sector barely reached 17% in 2022

A real girl power within Simplon hosted in the Bellefontaine district. And a necessary girl power… “The situation in tech is extremely problematic in France: in 2022, the proportion of women in the sector has barely reached 17% according to Gender Scan 2022. Women are largely absent. Here, we want to break stereotypes,” explains Cécile Couderc, head of the Simplon Occitanie Ouest campus. “What’s more, the demand for this type of profile is not drying up, as evidenced by various studies and as evidenced by Simplon.co’s partner companies. Whether in digital companies, industrial companies… all sectors combined and whatever their size, 500 positions were open in Occitanie in April 2023, an increase of almost 30% over the first quarter. »

The problem with the alternation…

With Simplon Montpellier, these training courses want to participate in the local development of these sectors and the integration of these women into a still very masculine environment. The only problem with this 22-month training: finding a work-study program. “There are positions. But alternating much less. All our work is to succeed in convincing companies to take our students on work-study training,” adds the campus manager. “This is actually the biggest difference between men and women in this sector: they have more doubts about their ability to pass an interview. We are also here to reassure them. They have the same skills as men,” assures the trainer, a professional developer.

At the end of the training, each participant will be issued with a level 6 professional certification as an Application Designer and Developer.
