Gynecologist suspected of rape withdrawn from his responsibilities

Emile Daraï, renowned gynecologist at Tenon hospital in Paris targeted by a judicial investigation for “rape of a minor over 15 years”, is “withdrawn from his responsibilities as head of department and educational manager”, announced Friday the AP-HP and Sorbonne University. These two institutions had decided on September 20 to launch an internal investigation.

A specialist in endometriosis, head of the gynecological-obstetrics and reproductive medicine department at Tenon hospital, Emile Daraï is the target of at least two complaints, says AFP. The Paris public prosecutor’s office opened on September 28 a judicial investigation for “rape by a person having authority over a minor over 15 years old”. The investigations were entrusted to the Brigade for the protection of minors.

The doctor, who still consults, has been accused by several ex-patients of performing vaginal and rectal exams brutally and without asking for consent. The violent acts suffered by women during gynecological and obstetrical follow-up are “not isolated facts” in France and call for an “awareness” of the public authorities, concluded in June 2018 a report of the High Council for Equality on this subject.
