António Guterres is one of the most experienced diplomats on the planet, so it can be assumed that he knew exactly what effect his words would have. The Secretary General of the United Nations was apparently keen to tell the UN Security Council that the murderous attack by the terrorist organization Hamas on Israeli civilians did not happen “in a vacuum.” On the one hand, this is true because nothing happens in a vacuum, especially not in the Middle East. On the other hand, this is an outrageous statement because it suggests, at least subtly, that the Israelis themselves could be to blame for being attacked by murderers and butchers.
