Gustav Klimt’s “Lady with a Fan” is now the most expensive painting in Europe. In London, the picture was auctioned for the equivalent of more than 86 million euros.

Gustav Klimt’s latest portrait, Lady with a Fan, fetched £74 million (more than €86 million) at auction in London, breaking the previous record in Europe. This was announced by the auction house Sotheby’s on Tuesday evening. The record for the highest price at an art auction in Europe was held by Alberto Giacometti’s sculpture “Walking Man I”, which Sotheby’s auctioned in 2010 for £65 million.

“Lady with a Fan” was discovered after Gustav Klimt’s death

Sotheby’s had expected the Klimt painting to be priced at around £65million. It was not announced who ultimately won the contract.

The unknown “Lady with a Fan” was found on the easel in Klimt’s studio after he died unexpectedly in February 1918 at the age of 55. The colorful portraits of the Austrian painter are only very rarely on the open market. In 2006, his portrait “Adele Bloch-Bauer II” was auctioned at Christie’s in New York for 87.9 million dollars (81.5 million euros). In 2017, it changed hands in a private sale for $150 million.
