Gulf of Oman: Further deaths from cyclone

Cyclone “Shaheen” hit land at speeds of up to 150 kilometers per hour: the death toll in Iran and Oman has continued to rise. Several fishermen are still missing. In the meantime, “Shaheen” has weakened slightly.

The death toll as a result of cyclone “Shaheen” has risen to 13 people. The Oman National Emergency Management Committee said the body of a man who was washed overboard by the tide was found. When the cyclone reached the country on Sunday, a child drowned in a similar way and two foreigners from Asian countries were killed in a landslide. No exact cause of death was given for another seven victims.

Iranian state television reported that rescue units had found the bodies of two fishermen who were traveling with three missing colleagues in front of the village of Pasabandar near the Pakistani border. Deputy Speaker Ali Niksad said on Sunday that he feared that six fishermen had been killed by the cyclone.

Zyklon is weakening

According to the Meteorological Institute of India, “Shaheen” reached wind speeds of up to 150 kilometers per hour when it hit the mainland. In the meantime it has weakened to 90 kilometers per hour. The foothills of the cyclone extend across the border into the United Arab Emirates.

Video images from Omani channels showed vehicles flooding and people trying to make their way through the muddy brown flood. State television showed people being rescued by helicopters in flooded areas. People ran through flooded streets while a tractor plowed through the mud.

In the run-up to the cyclone, the people of Oman had been asked to leave the coastal areas. Several thousand people were placed in emergency shelters.
