Guillermo del Toro almost made a film about Star Wars villain Jabba the Hut. But nothing came of it.

Guillermo del Toro (59) almost made a film about “Star Wars” villain Jabba the Hutt. The top Mexican director spoke about this in detail for the first time Interview with the film magazine “Collider”. In 2015 the filmmaker had for the first time presented his plans, which were still very vague at the time. Just recently revealed screenwriter David S. Goyer (57) that he had specifically worked with del Toro on a script for a film in the “Star Wars” universe. The “Pan’s Labyrinth” director then confirmed via X, that it was actually a spin-off of Jabba the Hut.

As is well known, nothing came of the project that was supposed to outline the rise and fall of gang boss Jabba in the style of “The Godfather.” Those responsible for the “Star Wars” universe instead focused on the spin-off “Rogue One” (2016) and a solo film about Han Solo two years later.

“We have learned”: Guillermo del Toro is not bitter

But Guillermo del Toro is not bitter about the failure of his vision. At least not always, as he reveals to “Collider”. Instead, he wants to see his and his team’s work as “good training.” “We designed a great world. We designed great things. We learned,” he said again and again to his employees. “You can never be ungrateful towards life,” del Toro philosophizes. “Whatever life throws at you, there is something you can learn from it.”

Instead of entering the “Star Wars” universe, Guillermo del Toro went his own way. He won an Oscar in 2018 for the modern monster fairy tale “The Shape of Water.”
