In 1998, Guildo Horn took seventh place at the ESC. After the 2023 embarrassment, he has a drastic suggestion: Germany should take a break.

Once again, the German contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest made a brutal crash landing. Lord of Lost were held to a disappointing last place finish in Liverpool last Saturday. For the pop singer Guildo Horn (60) reason enough to question the entire construct of the German ESC approach. In a detailed Facebook post the ESC participant from 1998 (seventh place) comments on the events and announces a drastic proposal: Germany should withdraw in order to readjust itself.

Germany is obviously “not necessarily the express favorite of our European neighbors”. For him, that’s why “the light at the end of the tunnel is unfortunately off”. His suggestion: “Just take a break and invest the money saved wisely!” For example in the construction of day care centers or the support of food banks. He would then “step in with a certain ease of being” “in a few years” with a new creative team. That helps immensely when making music.

He currently feels reminded of the current national soccer team, which has also not had any success for years, but does not dare to make a new start at official level and instead “constantly stirs the same sticky soup”. “But it won’t work that way!” Horn becomes clear. There is also a lot to speculate about “why”: “I might do that when I’m even older!”

Guildo Horn had his problems with ESC 2023

In general, Guildo Horn did not seem to have much fun at ESC 2023. Despite his “heartfelt willingness” to “go deep emotionally” on his couch, no melody “sticked to my pituitary gland for a long time”: “I was never really taken with me.” For him, unfortunately, the winning title of the Swedish interpreter Loreen (39) is more of the second infusion of what has long been experienced. “In summary, I found the ESC 2023 musically largely bland,” is Guildo Horn’s devastating verdict.
