Hanging out during the day, hunting at night – what sounds like the ideal job description for all party enthusiasts is a method for the only flying mammal: During the day, the native bat lives hidden in tree hollows, old walls, under roof ridges or in church towers. This is probably the origin of the once eerie image of the flying mammals, which has long since changed. Today, bats are rightly considered animals worth protecting. On the occasion of the 25th European Bat Night on August 28, the State Association for Bird Protection invites you to tour the “Batnight” in the English Garden to learn more about the fascinating world of bats.
There is actually a lot of interesting to tell about the nocturnal animals that fly between their fingers with the help of flight membranes and, thanks to ultrasound, never lose their bearings even at night. In order to be able to experience their nocturnal hunt up close, their calls are made audible by bat detectors. The different types of bats that occur in Munich, such as the noctule bat, the dwarf bat or the water bat, can be identified through the different ultrasound sounds. Although bats now enjoy great sympathy in large parts of the population, all 25 Bavarian bat species are still endangered, and 14 species are on the red list.
