One of the last Afghan prisoners has been released from the US Guantanamo prison camp. He had been arrested 15 years ago. Another Afghan remains awaiting release without trial.
One of the last Afghan detainees from the US Guantánamo prison camp is free. Assadullah Harun will return to his family after years in captivity, the spokesman for the incumbent Taliban government said.
“We would also like to thank our brother country Qatar for paving the way in this regard,” Sabiullah Mujahid said in a statement. His lawyer confirmed the release of the dpa news agency.
Harun was arrested in Afghanistan 15 years ago, according to the Afghanistan Analysts Network think tank.
Another Afghan is still awaiting release
The controversial Guantanamo prison camp is located in Cuba at the US naval base Guantanamo Bay. At times almost 800 people were imprisoned there. The camp was set up by Republican President George W. Bush after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to hold suspected Islamist terrorists without trial.
The last Afghan detained in Guantanamo is Mohammad Rahim. He is said to have been tortured in captivity. According to his lawyer, there were never any charges. “Information on Rahim is particularly sparse as the US has classified him as a ‘senior’ prisoner and has classified much information about him as classified,” a report on the man said.
