Rockstar made the announcement at the end of a community update. First, however, it was communicated that the next-gen versions GTA V and GTA Online on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S will start on March 15th. On the PlayStation, the new standalone version of GTA Online can be played free of charge for three months. The next-gen version maxes out at UHD resolution and up to 60 frames per second, has longer view ranges, higher-resolution textures, and the usual upgrades for the consoles. These include faster load times and ray tracing.

GTA 6 in progress

Originally developed for the venerable Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, GTA V has remained popular for so long and continues to generate high sales, even surprised Rockstar. There is talk of an “unprecedented longevity” from GTA V. This creates a certain impatience about a possible successor, which is now being promised. “Active development of the next title in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway,” writes Rockstar.

There is no more information at the moment. However, it is clear that the “next title” means GTA 6. This is what fans have come to expect, anything less than a full sequel would only provoke lasting disappointment and would therefore need to be more clearly outlined at the initial announcement – the Diablo Immortal announcement can serve as a cautionary tale. The context of GTA V also makes it clear what it’s actually about.

share price rises

As a result of the announcement, the share price of parent company Take Two rose by a good five percentage points. The reaction from investors shows the importance attached to GTA and GTA Online. Because in the nine years after publication, a successor has not been economically lucrative, since the online part still attracts huge numbers of players and is therefore financially profitable. There was hardly any room for other games either, the only release since then has been the western epic Read Dead Redemption 2 (test), whose online mode has also had great results from an investor’s point of view.
