Grünwald – Gymnasium accepts students from the Ukraine – District of Munich

The Gymnasium Grünwald accepts students from the Ukraine who have found a place to stay with families in Grünwald. Monday was the first day of school for the 21 boys and girls. They were welcomed into the auditorium together with their companions by headmistress Birgit Korda. The school put together a program for the Ukrainian children and young people which, according to the school, includes a mix of German lessons, lessons in Ukrainian subjects and a supervised leisure programme. Part of the lessons could be given by a Ukrainian German teacher who had to flee Kyiv and found a place to stay in Munich with her daughter. She speaks good German and thus also serves as a mediator between the school and the Ukrainian guests. In addition, the children and young people are provided with German students as “buddies” who look after them at school. In addition, a graduate of the high school who speaks Russian has agreed to accompany the Ukrainian guests and translate for them. A fundraiser was also launched on the initiative of teachers and students. Essential things such as clothing were collected from the families of the Grünwald high school students.
