Grünwald – Corrected memorial plaque for war victims at the cemetery – District of Munich

Hella Neusiedl-Hub is pleased that the municipality of Grünwald has taken up her suggestion and corrected mistakes on a memorial plaque for victims of the Second World War in the cemetery. While researching her book “Traces of the Grünwalder Past 1933-1945”, the resident of Grünwald noticed that names and ranks had been misspelled on the previous commemorative plaque. The new commemorative plaque was made by the Grünwald sculptor Barbara Hoyer, who created the old one.

In March 2020, Neusiedl-Hub informed the community about the errors, and now they discovered the corrected version while preparing their next tour for the adult education center. Thankfully, according to Neusiedl-Hub, the municipality not only corrected names and ranks on the new plate, but also took up their suggestion and the abbreviated ranks of the Wehrmacht soldiers who died in Grünwald and the British crew of the Lancaster let bombers out. During her tours of the cemetery, the woman from Grünwald realized that abbreviations such as Uffz. for non-commissioned officer, Sgt. for sergeant or F/O for flying officer were no longer common among the general public.

In addition, the community has had the job titles of the civilians killed in Grünwald added – a suggestion that Neusiedl-Hub received from Klaus Mayring. Mayring is the grandson of master tailor Alois Kestermann, who died on September 21, 1942, two days after an air raid on his house at Forstwg 6, from shrapnel in his abdomen.

The “Walk through the Grünwald forest cemetery” guided tour with Hella Neusiedl-Hub will take place on Saturday, October 8, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Meeting point at the funeral parlor of the forest cemetery, Tölzer Straße 43. Registration at the VHS (telephone 089/641 11 82) is required.
