Grünwald and the Catholic bulwark – District of Munich

from

Claudia Wessel, Grunwald

The fact that politics has been pursued with a heavy hand in Bavaria for 500 years can also be traced back to two brothers who met on February 10, 1522 in Grünwald Castle for the “Grünwald Conference” to discuss how to retain their power. The Wittelsbach dukes Wilhelm IV and Ludwig X met at the place of their youth – they had spent a lot of time here with their father Duke Albrecht IV as children, Ludwig was even born there – because danger was looming. And from Wittenberg. There, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther published his 95 theses against the abuse of indulgences. Thanks to the printing press, the news also spread to Bavaria and alarmed the brothers, who had just come to an agreement in 1516 after long inheritance disputes and divided the power among themselves. Ludwig resided in Landshut and Wilhelm in Munich. And now there was a threat of “restlessness again”.
