Großweil: Why there are doubts about the fish-friendly hydroelectric power plant – Bavaria

In Großweil in Upper Bavaria there is a facility that is intended to protect the life of river animals. An expert opinion now states that no fewer fish die in the turbine than in conventional power plants. The inventor is outraged.

It was almost five and a half years ago that the CSU politician Ilse Aigner raised high expectations in Großweil in Upper Bavaria. “This is our Bavarian way: Progress through innovation, also and especially in hydropower,” said the then Minister of Energy and current President of the State Parliament at the groundbreaking ceremony for a small hydroelectric power station in the Loisach. “If the system works, aquatic ecology, fish protection and energy production are possible at the same time.” The plant is now in operation. At least from the point of view of the fishermen, it turned out that they were not able to meet the high expectations.
