The Karlsruhe exhibition hall isn’t exactly heartwarming, but the Greens have still set themselves up comfortably for their party conference. In one corner hang posters from the early days, such as a child’s picture with a smiling sun and flowers that are almost as big as trees. “We only borrowed the earth from our children,” it says. It looks funny and a bit naive – roughly how the Greens like to be portrayed by their opponents. Robert Habeck addresses it directly. “I’ve often read in the last few months that the Greens have to come to terms with reality,” he says. Then he raises his voice indignantly: “I can’t hear it anymore!”
