Anyone who wants to learn something about the ability to suffer in local politics should travel to Schwerin on a sunny Saturday, of course by train, of course with a delay. He resists the temptation to check into “Kids Fun World”, an amusement park with a bouncy castle and a giant slide within sight of Schwerin Castle, where the state parliament is. He enters room 357, where sweating people are bending over laptops while the oxygen is slowly running out. The next amendment to the municipal constitution is pending. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Greens came to the state capital this weekend to discuss which of the 176 paragraphs could do with an update, to tell the parliamentary group about everyday life in the countryside, where they have trouble filling the committees, and concern that only those who think everything sucks come to the residents’ question time.
