The Munich cultural scene is suffering – from the late effects of Corona and the climate crisis. The Club Import Export, for example, shows how the players themselves are fighting against a drop in visitors and rising costs. In order not to go broke, the team started a fundraiser; the loyal followers brought together several thousand euros and thus the rescue. for now. But import export needs regular and long-term help in order to continue to be open to everyone (even the less rich) and to be able to pay fair fees. The Greens in the town hall recognized this and, together with the government partners from the SPD, submitted an application to support this “important event location, meeting place for the music and culture scene” and socio-cultural and educational location with more funding.
It is an application for a whole package that the governing coalition has just launched. At the top is the demand for a cultural advisory board. He should support the city council and all departments with his expertise and actively participate in the design of cultural development plans. For example, when new settlements are planned and culture is to be given space for studios and events. “The changes in a growing city include not only trams and kindergartens, but also the cultural infrastructure,” says Florian Roth (Greens). And when it comes to questions such as how to revitalize the desolate inner cities with culture, the cultural workers themselves should have a decisive say.
As early as 2019, the Greens applied for a culture readiness in the city council and included this as a goal in the coalition agreement. However, the “human resources” for the “conception in a broad dialogue with the relevant actors” have so far been lacking. A position in the cultural department is now to be created for this purpose. The team headed by cultural advisor Anton Biebl will also be reinforced with two independent positions, one of which will increase the appeal of Munich’s film and media landscape and one of which will develop strategies for ecologically sustainable action by municipal and independent cultural institutions.
The pop department should also get more funding. The SPD and Greens want to provide 50,000 euros for low-threshold “micro-funding” in 2023. They are intended to help newcomers and musicians from migrant milieus, especially in the “grassroots and small development area”. A full-time position is to be created for advice and distribution. The Munich pop culture scene is also being made mobile again: the old tour buses that musicians can borrow for concerts are to be replaced after 300,000 kilometers by new, climate-neutral vehicles. Sponsors are also being sought for this.
