“Black and green go together as well as licorice and spinach,” Guido Westerwelle once said. That was in 2010 after the break of the first black-green state government. Westerwelle, who has since died, was FDP leader at the time and was not entirely free from malicious glee. Now you actually can’t imagine what licorice tastes like with spinach. Nevertheless, the CDU and the Greens have not allowed themselves to be deterred by Westerwelle’s dictum in recent years.
