Chancellor Scholz is trying to find alternatives to Russian gas in North America. He would not have to travel that far: Germany also knows how green hydrogen can be produced. Wouldn’t that be a chance?

In its search for alternatives to Russian gas, the German government is looking far afield, to Canada. The Canadians are supposed to supply green hydrogen, and it almost sounds as if this is as rare as the gold that fortune hunters once dug on the Klondike River in the north-west of the country. The Federal Chancellor would not have to travel that far. The technology of electrolysis, with the help of which electricity from wind and sun is converted into so-called green hydrogen, is very well known in Germany – also thanks to the previous federal governments, which have funded relevant research projects in the past. Alone, it remained at around two dozen systems in the country: due to inefficiency. Because energy in the form of coal and gas was so cheap, investments in green hydrogen in Germany were largely overslept.
