Green hydrogen from the microwave – economy

Most of the plants that produce the climate-friendly energy source are huge. But a German-Italian company sells small devices for home use – and has big plans.

The name of the short dead end is fitting: “Energiewende” is the name of the street that leads to the Enapter factory on the edge of the Münsterland municipality of Saerbeck. The gray hall barely stands out against the sky on this drizzly morning; there are fields around it. The building is larger than three football fields – and is currently almost empty. But in the future, electrolyzers, i.e. devices that produce hydrogen, will be mass-produced here. Jan-Justus Schmidt shows where something should be in the hall. “We’re just waiting for demand to increase enough,” says Enapter’s chief technology officer. “We are well prepared.”
