One of the island’s main attractions is the old town of Kerkyra, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a journey back in time with its Venetian-style buildings and narrow streets. Built in the 15th century, the fortress also offers breathtaking views over the sea and the city, which captivate locals and visitors alike.
The cultural diversity of Corfu is also highlighted by historical figures such as Empress Elisabeth of Austria (1837-1898), known as Sisi, who fell in love with the island and had her summer residence, the Achilleion, built here. Preferably outside on Corfu
Not only those interested in culture will get their money’s worth in Corfu. The island also offers numerous opportunities for outdoor and nature lovers. What stands out is the Pantocrator, the highest mountain on the island, from whose summit you have an incomparable view of the Ionian Sea. The mountain’s name, which means “that controls everything,” reflects its majestic appearance and symbolic importance for the island.
Further hiking trails lead to Cape Drastis, where the contrast between the lush green of the olive groves and the bright turquoise of the sea fascinates hikers. The Corfu Trail, a multi-day hiking trail, takes adventure seekers through the Koryssion Lagoon, the picturesque village of Chlomatiana to the coastal town of Benitses, among other places, and offers a unique opportunity to explore the island’s varied landscape. For families, we also recommend a trip to Agios Georgios, a family-friendly beach near the neighboring islands of Matraki and Otoni.
Unique scenery
A place on Corfu combines hiking, history and culture like no other on the island: the fortress ruins of Angelokastro (“Castle of Angels”) rise on the northwestern tip of Corfu, which bear witness to the strategic importance and rich history of the island. The fortress was built in such an seemingly impossible location that its name is no coincidence. It is certain to be at least a thousand years old, but there was probably a Byzantine fortress on the same site long before that.
Angelokastro is not only a witness to the past, but also a starting point for hikes in the surrounding nature, which is characterized by its impressive beauty and tranquility. This historic place uniquely combines the eventful history of Corfu with the natural beauty of the island and offers every visitor a fascinating discovery.
For lovers: Between the Butterfly Bay and the Canal of Love
In addition to the cultural and natural treasures, Corfu also offers idyllic places for romantics. The “Butterfly Bay” and the “Canal of Love” are just two of the picturesque places that enchant visitors with their peculiarities and legends. While Butterfly Bay impresses with its unique shape and the different colors and water temperatures, the Love Canal promises those who jump from the sandstone cliffs to find true love.
