Great Britain: Sunak announces new elections – politics

New elections are taking place in the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced this. He named July 4th as the date. Sunak had previously called his cabinet together for a meeting in London.

Sunak and his Conservative Party are currently under considerable pressure. The Tories suffered a heavy defeat in the local elections at the beginning of May. The opposition Labor Party won a parliamentary seat in northern England and control of numerous city councils. This increased the pressure on Sunak to bring forward the general election expected in the second half of the year.

Voting must take place by January 2025 – the specific date was not yet known. In national polls, Labor is around 20 percentage points ahead of the Tories. This threatens to end after 14 years in government.
