Former British Prime Minister David Cameron has been appointed his country’s new foreign minister. This was announced by the government headquarters at 10 Downing Street in London on Monday.
Cameron’s personnel are the most spectacular in a major shakeup in the British cabinet. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had previously fired his Home Secretary Suella Braverman and was succeeded by James Cleverly, who was previously Foreign Secretary. Sunak is fighting for his political survival in the face of miserable poll numbers and a general election scheduled for next year. A cabinet reshuffle had been expected for some time.
Cameron was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from May 2010 to July 2016. The now 57-year-old conservative politician resigned after the British voted to leave the European Union in the referendum he had called for. At that time, Cameron campaigned for his country to remain in the EU.
Cameron wrote on “Although I have not been at the forefront of politics for the last seven years, I hope my experience will help me support the Prime Minister in tackling these important challenges,” said Cameron.
Resignation of the Minister of Education
Meanwhile, Education Minister Nick Gibb has resigned from his position. He wanted to take on a diplomatic role after the general election and asked Sunak to dismiss him from his post and he agreed, he wrote on Platform X. He also published his resignation.
Home Secretary Braverman has been heavily criticized in recent days after her comments on the pro-Palestinian rallies in Britain. She described the demonstrators as a “mob” and spoke of “hate marches”. She also accused the police, over whom she heads, of treating left-wing demonstrators in a friendlier manner than right-wing ones.
This is not the first time that Braverman has left office. She was already Home Secretary under Sunak’s predecessor Liz Truss and left the post at her insistence: she is said to have forwarded secret government documents via her private email address.
