Boris Johnson wanted to return to power after a three-month hiatus. But the Tories have recognized that they need a different strategy if they are to survive politically.

Slowly, very slowly, the British Conservatives are emerging from the populist nightmare that has weighed on them since 2016. Many will soon no longer remember the grandfather of (actually English) populism, Nigel Farage; most recently he presented three types of gin from Cornwall to the public. Boris Johnson, however, has brought populism to the center of the British party system and made the Tories the party of exit from the EU – a multi-generational issue that will continue to occupy British politics.
