He must have imagined things differently: a man had to break off his raid in Graz without having achieved anything. He failed not only because of an incredulous saleswoman, but also because the cash register was in closing mode and could no longer be opened.

An unsuccessful robbery in Graz, Austria is currently making the rounds on the internet. But the reason is not a record haul – on the contrary. As the Provincial Police Directorate Styria reported, the perpetrator had to flee without booty. How this came about can be seen in a recording from the shop, which captured the curious conversation between the robber, the saleswoman and the shopkeeper.

The failed robbery apparently happened like this: around 6 p.m., a masked man with glasses and a hat entered the store. First, he gave the task of a betting slip. Shortly thereafter, he threatened the employee behind the cash register with what the police said was a “deceptively real-looking pistol” and demanded money.

Saleswoman in Graz doesn’t believe the man at first

The surprised clerk then asks, “What do you want?” to which the man repeats that he wants money. The woman responds with a sarcastic “Yes, exactly” and calls her boss. Completely relaxed, she describes him in the Styrian dialect: “Des is a Überfoll”. The thief nods and thanks the woman.

However, when the cashier clicks around on the cash register computer, she finds that the money compartment can no longer be opened – or at least passes this on to the criminal with the patience of an angel. He stands in front of her with his gun drawn and apparently can’t believe his bad luck. “Just all the money, quick,” he demands. “Then I’m gone,” he says.

The boss wants to know what the man actually wants – he emphasizes again that he is asking for money. “No problem, I can give something there,” replies the shopkeeper. The woman at the cash register has to deny this again: “But I can’t go to the cash register,” she says. Because after 6 p.m., according to the surveillance camera it is now a few seconds after “six”, the system allegedly no longer allows access.

Attacks only during opening hours, please

As a kind of tip, after another explanation, the boss says that the technology is now at the end of the day: “Hadst miassn a hour fria kemman” (“You should have come an hour earlier”). After a moment of disbelief, the man trusts the two behind the counter and initially leaves the shop. The saleswoman calls out “Baba”, which in Austria is like a friendly farewell.

Seconds later he comes back and wants to know if you lied to him. He is again assured that the computer has now closed the cash register. The video ends.

A report from the police department shows that the man then fled on foot out of town without taking any booty – a search has so far been unsuccessful. Witnesses are now being sought.
