A tragic accident happened at the Grand Canyon Skywalk in Arizona: A 33-year-old man fell into the 1,100 meter deep gorge and died.

A tragic accident happened at the Skywalk Grand Canyon West, a very popular tourist destination in Arizona, in early June: According to local authorities, a 33-year-old man fell over a ledge and fell into the 1,100-meter-deep gorge below the sight is located. The authorities did not provide any further information on the exact course of the accident.

Police are investigating the case

A special rope rescue team immediately went to the scene of the accident with a Ranger helicopter after the rescue workers received the emergency call. Upon arrival, however, the emergency team could only determine the man’s death. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office announced in a post on Facebook that further investigations will now be carried out. It is also said that the remains of the 33-year-old were transferred to the Hualapai Nation, a federally recognized tribe of Native Americans in Arizona.

Bridge made of special safety glass

Located on the Hualapai Reservation, the skywalk was built by an investor for $30 million after receiving permission from the tribal council. The horseshoe-shaped glass bridge plus a glass railing opened in 2007 and has since welcomed more than 10 million visitors, according to the Skywalk’s official website. The attraction extends approximately 22 meters above the rim of an arm of the Grand Canyon. Under the seven centimeter thick five-layer special glass floor is the Colorado River, which tourists can see from the bridge.
