“Gran Turismo”: Are computer players the better racers? – Culture

Even at Sony and Playstation, they probably thought that adapting a car racing computer game as a car racing movie was a little, well, lame. That’s why the “Gran Turismo” project, a Playstation title for which Sony owned the rights, didn’t really get off the ground for a few years – until someone realized that it’s often not far from a car racing film to an auteur film, like the South African one Director Neill Blomkamp joins the team. That wasn’t a very safe number: Blomkamp had shot three smart science fiction films (“District 9”, “Elysium” and “Chappy”), but most recently published weird visual effects orgies on YouTube. He knows his way around computer games, at the beginning of his career he also made a few short films about the game “Halo 3”, but car races are a completely separate matter, also in terms of the staging in the film.
