Heavy rain triggered a tidal wave in the Höllentalklamm in the Zugspitz massif near Grainau on Monday afternoon. A police spokesman said that she also tore people and a bridge with her. The accident victims were apparently on the bridge. The police spokesman couldn’t say how many there were.
Hikers who observed the accident would have provided contradicting information. One of two people spoke like this, another of three and a third even of six. The mountain rescue service rescued several people from the gorge. According to the police, the scene of the accident is at the end of the gorge, near the exit point in a shallower area.
The measures are now being coordinated at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen police station. In addition to several patrol vehicles from the region, a police helicopter has also been requested. About 100 helpers are in use, it said.
The Höllentalklamm is a tourist attraction at the foot of the Zugspitze massif near Grainau. In it the Hammersbach tumbles over boulders and falls, foaming, milky, roaring over rocks towards the valley.
A year ago severe storms made the path through the Höllentalklamm impassable. A good 60 hikers got stuck at the Höllentalangerhütte and were ultimately flown out by helicopter.
