The Chinese handheld manufacturer GPD brings one new version of the unusual GPD Win 4 with Windows out. The device keeps the general case with sliding display and hidden keyboard. However, the 2023 version an upgrade to AMD Ryzen 7000 – more precisely the Ryzen 5 7640U or the Ryzen 7 7840U. Both SoCs rely on AMD’s more efficient Zen 4 architecture, which is built at TSMC using the 4 nm process.
However, the two SoCs differ in detail. While the Ryzen 5 7650U uses six cores and 12 threads with a maximum of 30 watts of power, the Ryzen 7 7840U uses eight cores and 16 threads. An important difference is also the built-in GPU, which is very important in a gaming device. The Radeon 760M in the Ryzen 5 clocks a little lower and comes with 50 percent fewer compute units – eight instead of twelve. The Radeon 780M in the Ryzen 7 should therefore be noticeably faster.
16, 32 or 64 GB of RAM
Otherwise, both devices can be equipped with 16 GB of RAM and an inserted M.2 2280 SSD. The Ryzen 5 model is limited to 512 GB of memory, while the Ryzen 7 variant offers 2 and 4 TB as an option. In addition, the LPDDR5x RAM can be 32 or 64 GB in size.
The handheld integrates an LTE module and the known controller elements like the predecessor. These include two joysticks, a directional pad, four action buttons, four shoulder triggers and integrated vibration motors. The device can also access a gyroscope.
The keyboard hidden under the display could be a plus for some enthusiasts. Speaking of the display, at 6 inches it’s a bit smaller than the panels on competitors like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally from Asus. The resolution is 1,920 x 1,080 pixels at a frame rate of 60 Hz.
So far, GPD has not revealed any prices for the new version of Win 4. The predecessor currently costs around 1,300 euros and therefore does not compete directly with devices such as the Steam Deck or the ROG Ally, which are much cheaper.
