Waymo, Google’s autonomous vehicle development subsidiary, is now letting its cars drive autonomously on the streets of San Francisco. Initially, however, only the company’s own employees are driven around. The rides are free and only serve to research how the autonomous vehicles perform in city traffic. Waymo cars have been driving through East Valley, a suburb of Phoenix, since 2017. Now the cars without a driver have to prove themselves for the first time in a big city. The vehicles used for testing in San Francisco are converted Jaguar I-Pace equipped with multiple sensors. Driverless electric cars are currently scheduled to run from early morning to late afternoon. From a certain point in time they should be available around the clock. The autonomous vehicles are not released for the general public because there is no approval for them. A Waymo company spokeswoman did not want to answer the status of the approval applications.
