Google risks creating a mess and creating an unprecedented situation

The Google Pixel may not be the first to receive Android 14 edited and developed by… Google. This is the big question that agitates the small world of Android since Google decided, it seems, at the last minute, not to release Android 14 this week.

All the press was buzzing with the same rumor on September 5: Google was going to deploy Android 14, finally! And no, the Mountain View giant has released new features for all Android users, but Android 14 is not in sight.

As the journalist pointed out Mishaal Rahman the same evening on X, the decision was undoubtedly taken very late and it could have a rather unprecedented consequence: an OEM (a smartphone manufacturer which develops its own interface based on Android 14) could release Android 14 before Google. A first.

Since everyone was waiting for the release on September 5, some had taken the lead and maybe a bit too much. Xataka points out in an article: OnePlus recently confirmed its desire to release OxygenOS 14 on September 25th. However, the version of Google is now expected on October 4, 2023, the date of presentation of its Pixel 8, which would be a first.

Should they wait or not?

The whole question now is: are OEMs required to respect an embargo signed with Google on the release of Android 14? Do they technically have the possibility to release their version before them? Especially if we consider that the “vulnerabilities detailed in Android 14 security release notes will be released on October 4, 2023”explains again Mishaal Rahman on X.

Samsung for its part, could well unveil One UI 6.0 on October 5 during its conference dedicated to developers, which again would be quite unprecedented. If Samsung is one of the good students in terms of releasing its versions of One UI as quickly as possible, we have never seen the Korean firm release its interpretation of a version of Android just after Google. However, this is all pure speculation. It is also possible that the shift in Google’s calendar shifts the deployment date of all other Android manufacturers.
