Golf trip by Olaf Scholz: Realpolitik in the desert – politics

Of

Daniel Brössler, Jeddah/Abu Dhabi/Doha

For Olaf Scholz, the day in the desert begins with a trip into the countryside. Mariam Almheiri, Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, escorts the Chancellor down a pretty footbridge through a mangrove swamp. Almheiri is the daughter of a German mother, studied in Aachen and can speak passionately about the fact that the United Arab Emirates not only wanted to be an energy supplier, but also a “hub” for climate protection. Hence the visit here, because the mangroves do the climate good service. Of course it’s still hot. The Chancellor took off his jacket long ago, but he will soon need a replacement for his white shirt.
