Bryson DeChambeau has an outstanding start to the 88th Masters. Golf superstar Tiger Woods has to serve detention at the Augusta National Golf Club.
Bryson DeChambeau took the lead at the 88th Masters with an impressive opening round. The American finished his first round at Augusta National Golf Club with 65 strokes in stormy conditions.
The 30-year-old, who made his money on the of LIV tour financed by Saudi Arabia, he needed one stroke less than world number one Scottie Scheffler from the USA. Munich’s Stephan Jäger played a round of 74 on his Masters debut and was tied for 54th place for the time being.
However, not all 89 players were able to complete their first round at the first major tournament of the year. A thunderstorm that morning caused a two and a half hour delay.
Woods is chasing a Masters record
Superstar Tiger Woods is also one of 27 professionals who have to finish their opening round on Friday. After 13 of 18 holes, the 48-year-old Californian was tied for 17th place on the par-72 course at Magnolia Lane, one shot under par. “The wind was everywhere. It was one of the most difficult days I’ve ever participated in,” said Woods, who only competes in a few select tournaments after his numerous injuries and operations. “The body is fine. We still have a lot to do this evening,” he said.
The 15-time major winner is chasing a record in Augusta. Since his first win in 1997, Woods has never missed the cut at the Masters. If he manages to reach the two rounds on the weekend for the 24th time in a row this year, he would alone hold the record.
