The winner in the new category “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” – meaning the biggest box office hit – is likely to be “Barbie,” which grossed more than $1.4 billion. But things remain exciting in the other 26 categories of the Globes.

Best film drama
One of the favorites is “Oppenheimer” by Christopher Nolan. The film about the father of the atomic bomb has a total of eight nominations. His biggest competitor is “Maestro” by Bradley Cooper. The US feature film tells the love story between the conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein and the actress Felicia Montealegre.
Bradley Cooper has slipped past the Oscar many times. With “Maestro” he now has a good chance of winning a Golden Globe, the harbinger of the Oscars.
Best Comedy or Musical
“Barbie” is nominated in this category – Greta Gerwig’s film leads the Golden Globes overall with nine nominations. The jury may also choose the strange indie drama “Poor Things” with Emma Stone in the lead role.
Best main actor drama
Some US critics are predicting that Bradley Cooper, who plays Leonard Bernstein in “Maestro”, could win. He has to prevail against Leonardo DiCaprio in “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Cillian Murphy in “Oppenheimer”.
Irish actor Cillian Murphy is nominated for Best Actor for his role as J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Best Leading actress drama
The German actress Sandra Hülser is one of the favorites. She is nominated for the film “Anatomy of a Case,” in which she plays a woman accused of murdering her husband. She competes against, among others, Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Best non-English speaking Movie
Sandra Hülser is also nominated in this category – with two films: “Anatomy of a Case” and the Nazi drama “Zone of Interest”.

Best serial drama
The special thing about the Golden Globes is that not only films but also TV series are honored. The series “Succession” about the successor to a media mogul has particularly good chances.
“The Crown” – the series about the British royal family – is also nominated. New is the series adaptation of the video game “The Last of Us” with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay.
In “Succession,” the four children of the fictional media mogul Logan Roy fight for their father’s trust – and the company.
Best comedy or musical series
The category could see a tight race between surprise hit “Jury Duty” – a reality TV show – football comedy Ted Lasso and critically popular series “The Bear” about a former top chef.
And how does the show work?
The comedian Jo Koy, who is relatively unknown in Germany, moderates the show. This is no easy task, as the Golden Globes have generated negative headlines for the past three years. Racism as well as accusations of bribery and taking advantage lay as a dark cloud over the show. Some stars like Tom Cruise boycotted the award ceremony.
This is also why the Golden Globes have been reorganized, there are new jury members, and the Hollywood foreign press, which once launched the event, now has hardly anything to report. With these measures, the organizers hope that the Globes can make a fresh start.
