Nominated eight times, won five awards: The film “Oppenheimer” about the inventor of the atomic bomb is the winner at the Golden Globes. German hope Sandra Hülser cannot take home the award for best actress.

The film “Oppenheimer” was presented at the 81st awards ceremony Golden Globes won five awards: The Hollywood film about the inventor of the atomic bomb was awarded, among other things, best drama at the coveted film and television awards on Sunday evening (local time) in Beverly Hills, California. The French legal drama “Anatomy of a Case” starring German actress Sandra Hülser was named best non-English language film. Hülser herself, who was nominated for best actress, came away empty-handed.

The film “Oppenheimer,” which was nominated for eight awards, was the top favorite at the 81st Golden Globes, along with the feminist satire “Barbie,” which was nominated in new categories. The lead actor in the film about US nuclear physicist Robert Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy, was honored as best male actor in a drama, while his colleague Robert Downey Jr was named best supporting actor for his role in “Oppenheimer”. The film’s director, Christopher Nolan, also received one of the coveted film and television awards. “Oppenheimer” also won in the Best Film Music category.

Golden Globes: Barbie wins in newly created category

The lurid satire “Barbie” was the favorite in the Globe race with nine nominations. The film by Greta Gerwig with Margot Robbie in the role of the iconic doll had to be content with two awards – in the new blockbuster category “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” for box office hits and for the song “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell.

French director Justine Triet’s legal drama “Anatomy of a Case” was named best non-English language film. The film also beat the competition in the screenplay category. Lead actress Hülser was also nominated for best actress in a drama – but Lily Gladstone secured this award for her role in the film “Killers of the Flower Moon” by veteran director Martin Scorsese, which is about the exploitation of the Osage Indians in the 1920s years.

Further awards went to US actress Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), who won a Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical. Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) was honored as best male actor in this category.

2024 is set to mark a new beginning for the Golden Globes

The 2024 awards ceremony should mark a new beginning for the Golden Globes. In 2021, the Los Angeles Times revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which voted on award winners for eight decades, had not a single black member.

In order to increase diversity, specialist journalists who were not members of the association were also allowed to vote in the following years. In June, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association finally handed over leadership to a private investor group led by US billionaire Todd Boehly and dissolved. The Globe presented the winners in 27 film and television categories in Beverly Hills. The trophy gala was broadcast live on US broadcaster CBS.
