Glider pilot falls to his death near Oberammergau – Bavaria

In the Ammer Mountains near Oberammergau, a 66-year-old glider pilot died in a crash on Saturday afternoon. His plane crashed on a steep mountainside. The cause of the fatal accident is not yet clear.

As the police announced on Sunday morning, an emergency call had been received around 2 p.m. the day before about a crash near Oberammergau. The rescue workers then discovered the wreckage of the glider at about 1400 meters in the alpine terrain near the Soilasee between the Laber and Ettaler Manndl mountains. Any help came too late for the pilot, so he probably died when he hit the rocky terrain.

According to police information, the man, who comes from the Munich district, started at the Pömetsried glider airfield on the edge of the Murnauer Moos with the help of a motorized tow plane. The crash in the mountains occurred just a few minutes after the glider was uncoupled. The Garmisch-Partenkirchen criminal police and the Munich II public prosecutor are investigating what exactly caused the accident with the support of an aviation expert. According to the police, these investigations will probably take some time.
