“On Wednesdays we wear pink.” – “Mean Girl” fans will recognize the iconic quote from the 2004 film “Girls Club.” Almost 20 years after the high school comedy starring Amanda Seyfried, Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Lacey Chabert appeared in cinemas and became a pop culture legacy of the 2000s, the long-awaited remake now follows.

The “Mean Girls” will be back in a new form next year in the form of a musical film. As usual pink and satirical, but with significantly more singing and dancing, the reboot promises to be a success. And even if Seyfried, Lohan, McAdams and Chabert aren’t there as students this time, “Mean Girls” 2024 will also bring back one or two familiar faces: Tina Fey, who was also responsible for the script for the first film, will slip in again the role of teacher Ms. Norbury, who leads a new generation of pink-loving students through the school year – just like Tim Medows, who is already known as Mr. Duvall from the original film.

“Mean Girls”: Comeback for Cady and the “Plastics”

The newly published Trailer shows that although most of the familiar faces have changed over the past 20 years, intrigue, evil and group dynamics are still part of modern high school life. The roles of Cady and the “Plastics” have simply been filled by new students – and even the infamous “Burn Book”, which is full of rumors and malice about fellow students of the “Pastics”, has survived the last 20 years. Further parallels such as a new version of the “Jingle Bells” dance further strengthen the feeling of nostalgia.

Nevertheless, the clip announces: “This isn’t your mother’s ‘Mean Girls'” (English: it’s not the typical, old-fashioned “Mean Girls” movie). Viewers can therefore expect some new twists and surprises. And the fact that the remake is actually being billed as a film version of the Broadway musical “Mean Girls” underlines this.

New cast impresses with lots of series stars

The storyline remains the same: After moving back to the States from Africa, Cady Heron initially tries unsuccessfully to fit in at her new high school. She finds allies in the loners Jan and Damien – and the three of them hatch a plan to infiltrate Cady into the dangerous “Plastics” clique in order to sabotage them. But as Cady suddenly feels more and more comfortable in the group and begins to identify as part of the pink following, she has to ask herself which side she really wants to be on. It’s too bad that at the same time she falls in love with the ex-boyfriend of the “Plastics” leader Regina, for whom she of course still has feelings…

In the remake, Reneé Rapp (“Sex Live of College Girls”) takes over McAdam’s role as Regina George. Instead of Seyfried in the role of Karen Smith, we will see newcomer Avantika Vandanapu. Bebe Wood (“Love, Victor”) plays the role of Gretchen Wieners, previously played by Chabert – and Cady, who the “Mean Girls” take into their infamous clique, is played by “Ultimately the universe doesn’t care about us” actress Angourie Rice played. Also appearing: Christopher Briney (“The Summer When I Became Beautiful”), Ashley Park (“Emily in Paris”) and Busy Philipps (“Cougar Town”).

After the “Barbie” pink year 2023, 2024 will also start in full pink.Mean Girls – The Girls Club will be released in German cinemas on January 25, 2024.
