The Ghostbusters are back. This time the youth go on a hunt for the supernatural. Is the cinema ticket worth it?

Autumn brings cinema fans some films that the corona pandemic has delayed in recent months. One of them is “Ghostbusters: Legacy”. The science fiction fantasy comedy by Jason Reitman (44) celebrates its theatrical release in Germany on November 18. Does the flick do justice to its famous predecessors from the 80s?

This is what Ghostbusters: Legacy is all about

The focus of the film is a small family: the single mother Callie (Carrie Coon, 40), her 15-year-old son Trevor (Finn Wolfhard, 18) and her twelve-year-old daughter Phoebe (Mckenna Grace, 15), who are known as technology geniuses turns out. After flying out of their Chicago apartment, the three move to a run-down farm in Oklahoma. It was the home of Callie’s late father, with whom she did not have a good relationship. His famous name: Egon Spengler. For some mysterious reason, he had left Manhattan and moved to rural Oklahoma.

Callie and the kids’ new home isn’t just about the ramshackle farm that’s creepy – with a cornfield in front of the door that does Stephen King credit. The small town is also shaken by inexplicable earthquakes. Not only Phoebe wants to get to the bottom of the matter. Your teacher, Mr. Grooberson (Paul Rudd, 52), puts the kids in front of the video recorder so they can carry on their research undisturbed. He also initially seems to be the only person who still remembers how the Ghostbusters saved New York from Gozer in the 80s …

In the meantime, the family has settled in their new home. Mother Callie gets closer to Mr. Grooberson. Trevor takes a fast food job to get Lucky (Celeste O’Connor, 22). And even Phoebe, to the surprise of her family, becomes friends with a boy who is called “Podcast” (Logan Kim) for good reason.

It takes almost an hour for a ghost to actually appear in the new “Ghostbusters” flick (probably a relative of Slimer). Before that, however, there are a lot of flashbacks for fans of the original film. In Egon Spengler’s farm, the kids will not only find their old equipment, but also the Ghostbusters emergency vehicle. As soon as you track down the ghosts and the reason for the earthquake, suddenly a lot – also optically – reminds you of the original story of the franchise …

Conclusion

“Ghostbusters” fans get what they could expect: allusions, equipment, gags and characters from the original. “Ghostbusters: Legacy” director Jason Reitman was just six years old when his father Ivan Reitman (75) brought him to the set of “Ghostbusters” in 1984. In the second half of his film, he continues the legacy of his father in almost every detail. The fact that the film works without an independent plot is mainly due to the lovingly told first half and the great actors.

Not only those who met with the ghost hunters Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray, 71), Dr. Raymond “Ray” Stantz (Dan Aykroyd, 69), Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis, 1944-2014) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson, 75) will get their money’s worth in “Ghostbusters: Legacy”. The young audience can experience a fantasy fairy tale that makes them laugh and shudder. However, there could be discussions about the role of Harold Ramis, who died in 2014, in the films …
