Ghost sites: These are Thuringia’s scariest places to get scared

They are in the middle of Germany: the Lost Places in Thuringia. Because many old and lonely large buildings in this federal state did not find any potential investors after the reunification. Instead of reviving the historic buildings with new ideas, they have been more or less left to their own devices for years.

The paint has long since peeled off and nature has reclaimed the buildings. Ivy not only climbs up facades, but also grows indoors. Moisture seeps into walls and ceilings, causing them to collapse. The wind sweeps through the broken windows.

The author duo Arno Specht and Uwe Schimunek, who have already published several books about spooky places, such as “Ghost Sites – Forgotten Places in Saxony”, do not shy away from any risks on their discovery tours. This requires a very special sense of smell, extremely good local knowledge and a good portion courage necessary.

Caution: Trespassing prohibited

This is because penetrating closed properties and entering buildings that are in danger of collapsing can be dangerous. The adventurers have to beware of rotten ceilings and climb stairs whose steps may lead nowhere.

Both have also presented another volume in which 14 forgotten places in Thuringia are presented. In recent years, the Lost Places professionals have scoured dozens of empty hotels, clinics, residential buildings and industrial plants in Thuringia and published their discoveries in words and pictures.

On the following page of the photo series we show atmospheric pictures from the volume “Geisterstätten – Forgotten places in Thuringia“, which was published by Jaron Verlag.
