A supposed cinema scandal, inspiring nostalgia and a true hero: these films attract people to the cinema in March.

After bombastic sensory impressions can be experienced in the cinema in February, especially thanks to “Dune: Part 2”, March also sets a calmer tone again. For example, in the drama “Miller’s Girl”, in which “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega (21) tries to wrap the much older “Hobbit” mime Martin Freeman (52) around her finger. In the middle of the month, however, the fantasy post also goes out – then “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” unleashes all sorts of ghosts on the screen. Oscar winner Anthony is currently starring in the haunting biopic “One Life”, which sheds light on the work of the Briton Nicholas Winton (1909-2015), who saved the lives of hundreds of Jewish children during the Second World War Hopkins (86) achieved his usual top performance.

“Miller’s Girl,” March 14

The talented literature student Cairo Sweet (Ortega) is ambitious and strong-willed. Her professor Jonathan Miller (Freeman) sees her creative potential – and not only that: Cairo is completely different from the other students and exerts a mysterious attraction on him that he finds difficult to resist. The teacher and the student become entangled in an increasingly dangerous emotional web that pushes both of them to their limits. When Jonathan decides to break off contact with Cairo, he has no idea what disastrous consequences this will have.

Assessment:

Will “Miller’s Girl” be the next supposedly exciting film after “Saltburn”? Or has the perception of today’s pop culture just become surprisingly bourgeois? Even in the run-up to the film, expressions of displeasure about the supposedly wicked act were piling up online. Such Lolita stories have already been filmed in many different and far more scandalous ways. Think of “Taxi Driver”, “Léon: The Professional” or, well, “Lolita”.

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” March 21

The Spengler family returns to where it all began: the iconic New York fire station. There they team up with the original Ghostbusters, who have set up a top-secret research lab to take ghost hunting to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, the old and new Ghostbusters must work together to protect their home and save the entire world from a second Ice Age.

Assessment:

The first part of the “Ghostbuster” reboot relied on new characters as well as a huge portion of nostalgia. This might be even more pronounced in part two, after all it’s about the old place of work and the original ghost hunters who are still alive also get a lot more to do in it.

“One Life,” March 28

Nicholas “Nicky” Winton (Johnny Flynn, 40), a young London broker, saves 669 children from the Nazis in the months before World War II. Nicky visits Prague in December 1938 and finds families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria living in desperate conditions and the imminent threat of a Nazi invasion. He immediately realizes that it’s a race against time: how many children can he and his team save before the borders are closed? 50 years later, the year is 1988, Nicky (Hopkins) is still haunted by the fate of the children he was unable to bring to safety in England. He blames himself for not doing more.

Assessment:

The real life story of Nicholas Winton is one that, in all its tragedy and bravery, could easily have come from Hollywood. The fact that a master of his craft, including Anthony Hopkins, was hired to create a cinematic monument to the savior of countless children’s lives is the least of it. “One Life” is an important story that needs to be heard, especially in times of growing anti-Semitism.
