GEW Bayern accuses Söder of populism – Bavaria

The Bavarian Education and Science Union (GEW) accuses Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) of populism. The background to this is the state government’s plans to teach more mathematics and German in primary schools in the future. Söder later specified that no religious lesson could be canceled in exchange for this – which the GEW Bavaria is now criticizing.

“Instead of causing confusion with such announcements, the state government should focus on the real problems in the education system,” said a statement sent on Friday. In addition, the argument that religious lessons cannot be canceled is incomprehensible because values education takes place here: this is carried out in primary school “regardless of the subjects”.

The GEW Bayern rejects any reduction in hours in music or sport. Education Minister Anna Stolz (FW) has also spoken out against cuts in physical education.
