Germany needs to reinvent its economy – economy

Economics Minister Robert Habeck’s decision to nationalize the gas importer marks a deep turning point in the history of the Federal Republic. Half a billion euros from the federal budget is needed to save a company that is responsible for 40 percent of Germany’s gas supply. On October 1st there will – maybe – be a surcharge to save the rest of the systemically important gas suppliers from collapsing. A cap on gas and electricity prices is now also conceivable. Meanwhile, private individuals, authorities and companies are trying to prepare for the winter by saving: start heating later, turn down the thermostat, turn on fewer lights in the shopping streets, leave Cologne Cathedral in the dark at night.
