Germany: knife attack on train, several injured

Several people were injured in a knife attack while traveling on a train in Bavaria on Saturday morning. The alleged perpetrator, a man, was arrested, police said local. According to Bild, he is a 27-year-old man of “Arab origin” who may suffer from psychiatric disorders. The mobile remains for the time being undetermined.

“According to initial information, several people were injured,” Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz (Bavaria) police said in a statement. She assures us that “no longer any danger” exists. The high-speed ICE train was brought to a standstill at Seubersdorf station.

According to the newspaper Bild, the attack occurred this Saturday around 9 am, south-east of Nuremberg, in a train connecting Regensburg to Hamburg. It would have injured three people, two of them seriously, but their lives would not be in danger, according to the newspaper.

“This knife attack is horrible” reacted the Minister of the Interior, Horst Seehofer. “I want to thank everyone, especially the police and train staff, for their courageous action, which has helped prevent even worse,” he added in a statement on Twitter. “The motive for the crime is still not clear and will now be determined,” he promises.

Germany has faced in recent years a double threat of terrorism, jihadist and right-wing extremist. Several attacks have been committed since 2015. On June 25, three people were killed and five others injured in a knife attack by a Somali in Würzburg, southern Germany.
