The corona pandemic has significantly increased the need for PCs and laptops. But many components are still in short supply. In Germany, Lenovo was therefore only able to serve around a third of the customers.

The world’s largest PC supplier Lenovo is experiencing a clear headwind from the industry-wide shortage of components.

In the past quarter “we could have delivered three times what we delivered,” said Lenovo manager Mirco Krebs of the German press agency with a view to the demand in Germany.

Lenovo increased PC sales in this country by 29 percent year-on-year. With some device configurations there are waiting times of six to eight months. Lenovo does not expect the situation to normalize until the middle of next year.

The continued strong demand for new computers in companies was the main reason for the growth. Lenovo sold 43 percent more PCs in this area. After mainly notebooks were purchased in the Corona year 2020, the business with desktop computers has now recovered somewhat. PC sales to consumers increased by ten percent. Lenovo generated sales of 855 million euros in the PC business in Germany – around 27 percent more than in the same quarter of the previous year.

The Lenovo group as a whole increased its revenues in the second fiscal quarter, which ended at the end of September, by 23 percent to just under 17.9 billion US dollars (15.5 billion euros). There was a jump in profit from 65 percent to $ 512 million. According to calculations by the market research company IDC, Lenovo remained number one in PC sales in the past quarter with a market share of 22.8 percent, ahead of HP with 20.3 percent.
