German weather service: warning of severe weather and heavy rain

Status: 08/19/2022 07:25 a.m

The German weather service predicts severe weather with heavy rain, hail and thunderstorms for large parts of the country. In Bavaria, the expected storms caused less damage than expected. However, there can be no question of the all-clear.

In the course of the day and into the coming night, there is a risk of it getting wet and stormy in some parts of Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of thunderstorms and high amounts of rain within a short period of time, especially in the east and north-east.

There could be showers and thunderstorms in these regions of the Federal Republic into the night of Saturday. This could be accompanied by local heavy rain with precipitation amounts of up to 20 liters per square meter in a short time. In some cases, the DWD also warns of “storm-like developments” with rainfall of up to 50 liters per square meter within a few hours.

In the south-east of the country there is a threat of “shower-like and sometimes thundery heavy rain” until Saturday morning. In some areas, the DWD is also forecasting storm-like rainfall of between 50 and 80 liters per square meter.

Extreme storms possible at the edge of the Alps

There could even be extreme storms on the edge of the Alps. In a short time there could be up to 140 liters of rain per square meter. Large parts of the south and east of Bavaria are affected, from the edge of the Alps and the foothills of the Alps to the Upper Palatinate. Severe weather warnings of level three and sometimes even the highest warning level four apply here. At level four, the DWD warns of extreme thunderstorms, sometimes with hail, extremely heavy rain or hurricane-force gusts from 120 kilometers per hour.

According to the DWD, showers and thunderstorms are expected to spread to the entire western half of Germany from the evening and during the night. There is also a risk of local heavy rain, and small-grain hail could also occur. Here the DWD expects stormy gusts with a wind force of up to 70 kilometers per hour.

So far mild storm conditions in Bavaria

As early as Thursday evening, there were individual thunderstorms in parts of Upper Bavaria with locally heavy rain, such as the Bavarian radio reported. Overall, however, the situation remained relatively calm, and the police hardly recorded any further-related operations.

Rescue workers in Upper Bavaria only reported a few flooded underpasses or basements flooded with rain. After the long drought, the soil in some places could not absorb the water quickly enough, which is why the water could only run off superficially, as a police spokesman said.
