Since it’s about tenths of a degree, it’s still open whether the previous October peak might even be exceeded, the DWD said on Monday in Offenbach. With an average temperature of 12.5 degrees, this year’s October is 3.5 degrees above the value of the internationally valid reference period 1961 to 1990. Compared to the current and warmer period 1991 to 2020, the deviation is 3.1 degrees.

More typically May than October

The highest temperatures this month were on October 28th with a summery 28.7 degrees in Müllheim near Freiburg. Karlshagen, east of Greifswald, reported the lowest October value on October 20 with minus 2.3 degrees.

The temperatures would have corresponded more to the “typical May in this country”, explained DWD spokesman Uwe Kirsche. It is “another look at our climate future”.

In Germany, temperatures and precipitation have been continuously recorded since 1881.
