In large parts of Germany, fresh snow will create wintry conditions on Sunday night – especially in the low mountain ranges. The German Weather Service warns of black ice.

The The German Weather Service (DWD) has announced heavy snowfall in the low mountain range this Sunday. Above 400 to 600 meters, up to 10 centimeters of fresh snow can be expected on Sunday morning and at higher altitudes even up to 15 centimeters, the DWD said.

The weather service warned, particularly in Bavaria, of significant traffic disruptions and the risk of tree damage due to the high snow loads and slippery conditions. In the Free State it could snow heavily on Sunday morning, especially in the north and in the Alps, even down to lower altitudes.

Snow and slippery conditions can also be expected in Baden-Württemberg, even at lower altitudes. According to the DWD, there will also be frost and slippery conditions in places in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland in the early morning, as well as fresh snow in the mountainous region. During the day, the snowfall line rises here again to over 600 and over 400 meters in the north and west of the Rhine.

The weather service also expected significant amounts of fresh snow in the Thuringian mountains. In Saxony, snowfall and slippery conditions can be expected in the Ore Mountains. In the mountains of Lower Saxony, the weather service predicted only light snowfall for Sunday. But things can also get slippery in deep areas.

According to the DWD, temperatures in Germany will reach 5 to 11 degrees on Sunday. Where there is no snow, there could be rain or sleet showers and isolated thunderstorms. In the afternoon and evening it is expected to clear up again and the showers are expected to subside.
