The German U21 national team has taken the lead in its group in the European Championship qualification. Coach Antonio Di Salvo’s team won against Poland 3-1 (0-1) in Essen on Tuesday and moved past the guests. The DFB team also won their fourth game, while the Poles, tied on points, lost for the first time in their fifth game.
In front of 8,559 spectators in the stadium on Hafenstrasse, Eric Martel from 1. FC Köln (56th), substitute Nick Woltemade from Weder Bremen (79th) and Merlin Röhl from SC Freiburg (82nd) scored the goals for the German youth team. Ariel Mosor (24th minute) initially gave Poland the lead. The nine group winners and the three best runners-up will qualify for the 2025 finals in Slovakia. The six remaining group runners-up will contest playoffs to determine the last three European Championship places.
