From the point of view of the employer-oriented Institute of the German Economy (IW), Germany will have to rely on immigration from abroad in the coming years in order to meet its need for workers. Without immigration, the number of 20- to 64-year-old residents in 2030 would be around eleven percent lower than in 2020, according to a study. At the beginning of 2020, almost 60 percent of the population were of working age between 20 and 64 years. In an EU comparison, Germany has a particularly strong need for skilled workers from abroad. “No other member state will be so dependent on immigration in the next few years as the Federal Republic,” said study author Wido Geis-Thöne. On average in the EU, the number of people of working age is expected to decline by 6.9 percent by 2030. In view of the increasing shortage of skilled workers, this number is alarming, because many of the future retirees will no longer be able to be replaced by young professionals.
