“The Teacher’s Room” receives the Golden Lola
The favorite “Nothing New in the West” received nine awards at the German Film Awards. “The Teacher’s Room” is “Best Feature Film”.
The German Film Awards ceremony took place in Berlin on Friday evening. While the German record Oscar winner “Nothing New in the West” by director Edward Berger (53) received the most awards with nine awards, the Golden Lola for “Best Feature Film” went to Ilker Çatak’s “Das Lehrerzimmer” (39 ). Leonie Benesch (32) was also honored as the best leading actress.

In the drama, Benesch plays a teacher who uses unconventional means to solve a series of thefts at her school. Three more Lolas – for direction, editing and screenplay – went to “Das Lehrerzimmer”. The big favorite “Nothing New in the West” won in the categories Camera, Film Music, Production Design, Visual Effects, Sound Design and Make-up, and received the Lola in Silver in the Best Film category.
Newcomer Felix Kammerer (27), who was in front of a camera for the first time for the anti-war film, received the award for “Best Male Lead”, while his fellow actor Albrecht Schuch (37) was honored as Best Supporting Actor.
Claudia Roth announces reform of film funding
Director Volker Schlöndorff (“The Tin Drum”, 84) received the honorary award for outstanding services to German film. Hollywood star John Malkovich (69) gave a eulogy via video link.
Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth (67) called for a discussion of abuses in the German film industry. The Greens politician spoke out firmly against “dependency relationships, abuse of power, physical assaults and sexualised violence on the set”. “We cannot and do not want to tolerate a climate of fear,” declared Roth, and at the same time announced a reform of film funding.
